Dr Christine Tomkins

My career in brief… I am Strategic Adviser to The Medical Defence Union, having retired from the post of CEO in September 2021. I qualified in 1980 and trained in ophthalmology before joining the MDU as a member of the medical secretariat in 1985. I led the clinical negligence claims team from 1993, becoming Professional Services Director in 1995, leading the team of doctors, dentists and lawyers providing the MDU’s assistance to members. I was appointed Chief Executive in 2009.

I have experience of the medico-legal environment in the UK and abroad, having assisted MDU members in the UK, Ireland, Australia, South Africa, Singapore, New Zealand, and Canada. I have lectured, written and broadcast on medico-legal matters in the UK and abroad for over 30 years and I have been a regular contributor to national consultations on matters of relevance to healthcare professionals.

I have served on the Medical Professional Liability Association’s Board since 2016 and I am currently Vice Chair.

What SAMF means to me and my hopes for the future of SAMF…I was appointed as a Trustee of SAMF in 2023. I am enthusiastic supporter of SAMF’s objective of supporting doctors and their dependants when the need arises, through our charitable mutual provident fund. I have spent most of my professional life assisting doctors through difficult challenges and will bring that experience and empathy to my role in SAMF. The pressures and contingencies of life afflicting the profession continue to evolve and, perhaps more than ever, SAMF’s help can make a truly significant difference when its most needed.
