My career in brief…I graduated in Medicine at St. Mary’s Hospital in 1976. Following two years in Bermuda I subsequently worked as a GP in Rugby for 17 years. After three years as Director of Primary Care at Warwickshire Health Authority I then joined the Medical Protection Society where I remained as a Senior Medico Legal Adviser until my retirement in 2017. During this time, I also graduated in 2004 with a master’s in healthcare law from Nottingham Law School.

I recently retired, after two three-year terms from the Independent Judicial Panel that deals with appeals and disciplinary and licensing issues for horse racing in the UK.

What SAMF means to me…For me, SAMF is a charity which has been serving doctors and their families for over 230 years. Despite the ever-changing landscape in medicine over this period, there remains a need to help our colleagues when circumstances conspire against them and they fall on difficult times. The safety net we provide for members and non-members is sometimes all there is to break their fall.

My hope for the future of SAMF…Though not as well-known as some others, this charity continues to fulfil a role in helping people who may not be able to seek or obtain the help they need elsewhere. I feel it is vital that SAMF expands its membership and profile so that the good work since 1788 goes on for the decades and centuries to come.
